Allison Janney

Allison Janney (also credited as Allison Brooks Janney) is an American screen and stage actor, born November 19, 1959, in Boston, Massachusetts. Over a career spanning decades, she has built a reputation for sharp comedic timing and formidable dramatic range, earning top industry honors including an Academy Award, BAFTA, Golden Globe, and multiple Primetime Emmy Awards.

Raised in Dayton, Ohio, Janney studied at Kenyon College and later received a scholarship to train at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. After early work in smaller film and TV roles, her major breakthrough arrived as press secretary C. J. Cregg on The West Wing (1999–2006), a performance that made her a household name and brought her multiple Emmy wins.

She continued to thrive on television with acclaimed turns on Masters of Sex and as Bonnie Plunkett on the sitcom Mom, collecting further Emmy recognition. Janney’s film work is equally varied, with memorable appearances in American Beauty, The Hours, Drop Dead Gorgeous, 10 Things I Hate About You, and Hairspray, plus voice acting as Peach in Finding Nemo.

On stage, Janney has earned major theater accolades and Tony nominations, underscoring a rare versatility across mediums. Her Oscar-winning performance in I, Tonya cemented her status as one of her generation’s most respected character artists.
