He broke into the mainstream with his 2011 novel The Martian, a survival tale set on Mars that later became the hit 2015 film directed by Ridley Scott. The success of the adaptation helped cement Weir’s reputation for crafting cinematic, high-concept narratives grounded in real-world science.
