Anna Maxwell Martin

Anna Maxwell Martin (born Anna Charlotte Martin on 10 May 1977 in Beverley, Yorkshire) is an acclaimed English actor known for intelligent, emotionally precise performances across film, television, and theatre. She has also been credited as Anna Maxwell-Martin, and has built a reputation for moving seamlessly between period drama, contemporary comedy, and hard-edged crime stories.

Her television breakthrough brought major awards: she earned two BAFTA TV wins for standout lead roles—Esther Summerson in the BBC’s Bleak House (2005) and the unforgettable “N” in Channel 4’s Poppy Shakespeare (2008). She later became widely recognized as the formidable DCS Patricia Carmichael in Line of Duty (2019–2021), while also showing sharp comic timing as Kelly Major in Code 404 (2020–2022).

From 2016 to 2022, Martin anchored the BBC comedy Motherland, earning a BAFTA nomination for Best Female Comedy Performance. Her screen credits also include Becoming Jane, Philomena, Moonshot, and I Really Hate My Job.

On stage, she has been equally respected, including a celebrated turn as Lyra Belacqua in the National Theatre’s His Dark Materials (2003–2004), and later in National Theatre Live: Constellations as Marianne.
