Anthony Mackie

Anthony Mackie (also credited as Anthony Dwane Mackie) is an American actor born on September 23, 1978, in New Orleans, Louisiana. After breaking into film in the early 2000s, he quickly became known for grounded, charismatic performances that move easily between indie drama, studio features, and franchise filmmaking.

Mackie made an early splash in 8 Mile as Papa Doc, then built momentum with notable turns in films such as She Hate Me, Million Dollar Baby, Half Nelson, and We Are Marshall. He earned major critical attention for Brother to Brother, which brought an Independent Spirit Award Best Actor nomination, and for his work in The Hurt Locker as Sergeant JT Sanborn, which added further awards recognition.

Global popularity followed through his portrayal of Sam Wilson in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, beginning with Captain America: The Winter Soldier and continuing into a leading chapter with Captain America: Brave New World. He has also taken on high-profile portrayals of real figures, including Tupac Shakur in Notorious and Martin Luther King Jr. in HBO’s All the Way.
