Cary Joji Fukunaga

Cary Joji Fukunaga (born July 10, 1977, in Oakland, California) is an American director whose work moves fluidly between prestige television and ambitious feature films. Known for a cinematic visual style and character-driven storytelling, he has become one of the most recognizable screen artists of his generation.

Fukunaga broke into mainstream attention by directing the entire first season of HBO’s True Detective (2014), a landmark run that helped define modern serialized drama. His work on the series earned him a Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series, alongside duties as an executive producer.

In film, he has steered acclaimed projects across genres, including the thriller Sin nombre (2009), the period romance Jane Eyre (2011), and the war drama Beasts of No Nation (2015). He later took the helm of the 25th James Bond adventure, No Time to Die (2021), and also contributed as a co-writer on the Stephen King adaptation It (2017).

Continuing to shape high-end TV, he directed and executive produced Netflix’s limited series Maniac (2018) and later executive produced and directed episodes of Apple TV+’s Masters of the Air (2024). He has also appeared as himself in documentary and interview projects such as The Sound of 007 and Designing Bond.
