Clarence Gilyard Jr.
Clarence Gilyard Jr. (December 24, 1955 – November 23, 2022) was an American screen and stage actor, as well as a university professor and author. Born in Moses Lake, Washington, he built a career defined by charismatic supporting turns and steady leading-man presence across film and television.
Many audiences first remember Gilyard for his sharp, scene-stealing work as Theo, the tech-savvy villain in Die Hard. He also appeared in major studio fare including Top Gun, where he played naval aviator Evan “Sundown” Gough, showing an ease with big-screen ensemble storytelling.
On television, Gilyard became a familiar face in long-running dramas. He portrayed Conrad McMasters on Matlock, serving as Ben Matlock’s trusted investigator, and later reached peak popularity as Ranger James “Jimmy” Trivette opposite Chuck Norris in Walker, Texas Ranger, including Walker, Texas Ranger: Trial by Fire.
Gilyard also took on faith-based roles, notably Pastor Bruce Barnes in Left Behind and Left Behind II: Tribulation Force, alongside credits such as Little Monsters, The Great Los Angeles Earthquake, and Off the Mark. Sometimes credited as Clarence Darnell Gilyard Jr., he is remembered for versatility, warmth, and a lasting impact both on set and in the classroom.
