David Gordon Green

David Gordon Green (born April 9, 1975, in Little Rock, Arkansas) is an American director known for moving fluently between intimate character studies, broad comedy, and studio franchise filmmaking. Emerging in the early 2000s, he made his name with lyrical, human-scale dramas including George Washington, All the Real Girls, and Snow Angels, often taking a hands-on role as writer or co-writer.

Green later pivoted into mainstream comedy, steering crowd-pleasers like Pineapple Express, Your Highness, and The Sitter, while also directing episodes of HBO’s Eastbound & Down. That versatility became a signature: he could deliver sharp comedic timing without losing the grounded, observational tone that defined his earlier work.

In the 2010s he leaned back into indie drama with films such as Prince Avalanche and Joe, then alternated between personal stories and larger productions, including Manglehorn, Our Brand Is Crisis, and Stronger. On television, he directed and executive produced episodes of Red Oaks.

Green reached a new peak of pop-cultural visibility by directing and co-writing the 11th, 12th, and 13th entries in the Halloween series with frequent collaborator Danny McBride. His later credits also include directing The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent and appearing as himself in genre and documentary projects.
