David Strathairn
David Strathairn (also credited as David Russell Strathairn) is an American screen and stage actor born on January 26, 1949, in San Francisco, California. Respected for his intelligence and restraint on camera, he has built a career defined by quietly commanding performances across film and television.
He is best known for portraying broadcaster Edward R. Murrow in Good Night, and Good Luck., a role that earned him an Academy Award nomination and cemented his reputation as a master of real-world character work. His film résumé also includes standout turns in L.A. Confidential as Pierce Patchett and Sneakers as Whistler, along with acclaimed projects such as The Firm, Lincoln, and Nomadland.
Strathairn has also made a strong mark on television, with notable appearances in The Sopranos, Alphas, The Blacklist, Billions, and The Expanse. For HBO’s Temple Grandin, he won a Primetime Emmy and received a Golden Globe nomination. A frequent collaborator with director John Sayles, he remains a versatile presence equally at home in drama, thriller, and prestige ensemble work.
