David Thewlis

David Thewlis (born March 20, 1963, in Blackpool, Lancashire) is an English actor celebrated for disappearing into distinctive character roles across film and television. Also credited early on as David Wheeler, he has built a reputation for versatility, earning major industry recognition including the Cannes Film Festival Award for Best Actor, alongside nominations spanning BAFTA, Golden Globe, Emmy, and SAG honors.

He made his screen debut in Little Dorrit (1987) and gained momentum through collaborations with director Mike Leigh, notably Life is Sweet and the acclaimed Naked, which brought him Cannes’ top acting prize. From there, Thewlis moved fluidly between period drama, fantasy, and animation, appearing in titles such as Seven Years in Tibet, Kingdom of Heaven, The Omen, and voicing the Earthworm in James and the Giant Peach.

Global audiences most readily recognize him as Remus Lupin in the Harry Potter films, a performance that helped cement his mainstream profile while he continued taking eclectic projects, including Basic Instinct 2. On television, he has also drawn praise for scene-stealing work, underlining a career defined by range, intelligence, and bold choices.
