Denis Villeneuve
Denis Villeneuve (born October 3, 1967, in Gentilly, Québec, Canada) is a Canadian director celebrated for tense storytelling, striking visuals, and ambitious scale. Over his career he has earned major industry recognition, including multiple Canadian Screen Awards and nominations from the Academy Awards, BAFTA, and Golden Globes, while his films have reached a global audience at the box office.
Villeneuve first made his mark with French-language dramas, including August 32nd on Earth, Maelström, Polytechnique, and Incendies. Incendies proved a turning point, bringing international attention and an Oscar nomination in the international feature category, and paving the way for his move into English-language filmmaking.
He quickly became a standout in Hollywood with the thrillers Prisoners, Enemy, and Sicario, before emerging as one of modern cinema’s defining sci-fi directors. Arrival earned him a Best Director Oscar nomination, followed by the acclaimed Blade Runner 2049 and his blockbuster adaptation of Frank Herbert’s saga in Dune and Dune: Part Two.
