Edward James Olmos
Edward James Olmos (born February 24, 1947, in Los Angeles, California) is an American screen actor, director, producer, and outspoken activist whose career has helped broaden Latino representation in U.S. film and television. He became widely recognized for intense, grounded performances that bring authority and humanity to every scene.
Olmos earned major acclaim on Miami Vice as Lt. Martin “Marty” Castillo, winning both an Emmy and a Golden Globe. His portrayal of teacher Jaime Escalante in Stand and Deliver brought further honors, including Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations, cementing his status as a leading dramatic talent.
On the big screen, he’s memorable as the enigmatic Gaff in Blade Runner and later returned to the world of the franchise in Blade Runner 2049. His credits also include 12 Angry Men (Juror 11), American Me (which he also directed), and In the Time of the Butterflies as Rafael Leónidas Trujillo, showcasing his range across genres and formats.
Beyond acting, Olmos has built a long résumé of directing and producing, while consistently advocating for more authentic, diverse images on screen. He continues to be celebrated as a trailblazing figure in American entertainment.
