Esai Morales

Esai Morales (born October 1, 1962, in Brooklyn, New York City) is an American screen actor known for bringing intensity and nuance to both film and television. Working across genres—from grounded drama to high-concept sci‑fi—he has built a career defined by charismatic, often morally complex characters.

Morales first drew wide attention with standout film roles including La Bamba opposite Lou Diamond Phillips and Bad Boys with Sean Penn. His filmography also spans titles such as Freejack, In the Army Now, Paid in Full, Fast Food Nation, and Rapa Nui, where he played Make—credits that highlight his range from action to social commentary.

On television, he has been a steady presence in acclaimed series. He appeared in PBS’s American Family, Showtime’s Resurrection Blvd., and portrayed Lt. Tony Rodriguez on NYPD Blue. Later roles include Joseph Adama in Caprica, Camino del Rio in Netflix’s Ozark, and DC’s Slade Wilson/Deathstroke on Titans.

In recent years, Morales reached a new global audience as Gabriel, the central antagonist in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One (2023) opposite Tom Cruise, a role he continues in Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning (2025).
