Garth Ennis
Garth Ennis (born January 16, 1970, in Holywood, Northern Ireland) is a celebrated comics writer whose sharp voice and dark humor have made him a standout in modern genre storytelling. Northern Ireland–born and later based in the United States, Ennis is widely associated with bold, character-driven series that blend satire, violence, and heartfelt drama.
He is best known for the Vertigo hit Preacher, created with artist Steve Dillon, a landmark title that helped define the imprint’s irreverent, adult-oriented tone. Ennis also earned major acclaim through an influential, long-running tenure on Marvel’s Punisher comics, reshaping the character with grounded intensity and moral bite.
Across his career, Ennis has built a reputation as a prolific collaborator, teaming with artists including Steve Dillon and Glenn Fabry on Preacher, John McCrea on Hitman, Marc Silvestri on The Darkness, and Carlos Ezquerra on projects tied to both Preacher and Hitman. On screen and in documentary appearances, he has also been featured as himself in titles such as Superpowered: The DC Story and Prisoners of Gravity.
