George R.R. Martin
George R.R. Martin (also credited as George Raymond Richard Martin and George Raymond Martin) is an American author, television writer, and producer born on September 20, 1948, in Bayonne, New Jersey. Celebrated for his intricate storytelling and morally complex characters, Martin has become one of the most influential voices in modern fantasy and screen culture.
He is best known for the epic novel cycle A Song of Ice and Fire, which inspired HBO’s Emmy-winning phenomenon Game of Thrones (2011–2019) and later the prequel series House of the Dragon (2022–present). Beyond Westeros, Martin co-created the long-running Wild Cards shared-world anthologies and expanded his reach into gaming through major worldbuilding contributions to Elden Ring (2022).
Martin’s impact has been widely recognized: Time once dubbed him “the American Tolkien,” and he later appeared on the Time 100 list of the world’s most influential people. His screen presence also includes appearances as himself in documentaries and pop-culture projects, along with a playful cameo credit in Sharknado 3: Oh Hell No!.
Long based in Santa Fe, New Mexico, Martin is also a notable patron of the arts—supporting the immersive collective Meow Wolf and owning the Jean Cocteau Cinema. The city even honors him with an annual George R. R. Martin Day.
