Jack Bender

Jack Bender (born September 25, 1949, USA) is an American director whose career spans television and film, with additional credits as an actor, producer, and screenwriter. Best known for his work behind the camera, he became a defining creative force in modern serialized TV.

Bender served as executive producer and lead director on ABC’s Lost, culminating in his direction of the series finale—an episode that cemented his reputation for shaping tone, pacing, and character-driven spectacle. Beyond the island, he has helmed episodes of major series including The Sopranos, Carnivàle, Alias, and Boston Public, consistently bringing cinematic tension to episodic storytelling.

Before becoming a sought-after director, Bender also appeared on screen, guesting on classics such as All in the Family, The Bob Newhart Show, and The Mary Tyler Moore Show. His film acting credits include roles in titles like The Million Dollar Duck and Savage!, reflecting an early, hands-on understanding of performance.

In later years, he continued expanding his TV footprint, including signing on to direct Syfy’s pilot Alphas. From acclaimed dramas to genre hits, Bender remains closely associated with ambitious, director-led television.
