James Hawes
James Hawes is a British television director from Wimbledon, London, whose career has been closely tied to UK drama since the mid-1990s. Known for confident storytelling and polished craft, he has moved fluidly between character-led drama and large-scale, audience-friendly entertainment.
Across decades of work, Hawes has built a reputation for versatility—handling everything from sumptuous period productions to prime-time adventure series. He also broadened his experience by producing documentaries for both British and American broadcasters, bringing a factual sensibility that often sharpens the pacing and detail in his scripted work.
Among his most recognized credits is his involvement in the modern-era Doctor Who universe, including Doctor Who and Doctor Who Confidential, projects that helped define the franchise’s contemporary identity. He is also associated with Kafka Uncovered, where he appears as himself.
A major milestone came with Enid, the biographical drama starring Helena Bonham Carter as children’s author Enid Blyton. The film earned Hawes a BAFTA nomination for Best Director in 2010, underscoring his standing as a key figure in British television direction.
