James Van Der Beek
James Van Der Beek (March 8, 1977 – February 11, 2026) was an American actor whose work spanned teen television, studio features, and independent film. Born in Cheshire, Connecticut, he was also credited as James David Van Der Beek and, occasionally, James Van Derbeek.
He rose to global recognition as Dawson Leary on Dawson’s Creek, a defining series of late-1990s pop culture that showcased his ability to balance earnest drama with sharp, self-aware humor. The role made him a familiar face to a generation and opened the door to a wide range of screen opportunities.
On film, Van Der Beek leaned into varied genres and tones, from sports drama in Varsity Blues as Jonathan “Mox” Moxon to darker ensemble storytelling in The Rules of Attraction as Sean Bateman.
