Janet McTeer

Janet McTeer (born August 5, 1961, in Newcastle upon Tyne, England) is an acclaimed English screen and stage actor celebrated for moving effortlessly between period drama and contemporary storytelling. After training at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, she built a reputation for bold, intelligent performances that have made her a standout presence in British and international productions.

McTeer’s theatre work helped establish her early profile, including a notable debut in the mid-1980s and major recognition for her commanding turn in A Doll’s House, which earned top honours on both sides of the Atlantic. She later returned to Broadway for high-profile productions such as Mary Stuart and Bernhardt/Hamlet, reinforcing her status as a formidable leading actress.

On screen, she has earned major award attention, including Golden Globe recognition and Academy Award nominations for her film work. Her notable credits span Carrington (as Vanessa Bell), Songcatcher (as Professor Lily Penleric, PhD), Tideland (as Dell), The King Is Alive (as Liz), and The Woman in Black (as Mrs. Daily).

Television audiences also know her for richly detailed character work, including an Emmy-nominated portrayal of Clementine Churchill in Into the Storm. In 2008, she was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for services to drama.
