Javier Bardem
Javier Bardem (born March 1, 1969, in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain) is one of the defining screen presences of modern Spanish cinema. Over a career spanning more than three decades, he has earned top international honors, including an Academy Award, along with multiple Goya Awards, plus BAFTA and Golden Globe recognition.
Born into a celebrated acting family—his mother is actress Pilar Bardem—he broke through in Spanish features such as Jamón Jamón, Live Flesh (as David de Paz), and Don’t Tempt Me (as Tony Graco). His emotionally fearless work in The Sea Inside as Ramón Sampedro further cemented his reputation for immersive, character-driven performances.
Bardem’s global profile expanded with acclaimed English-language roles, including his Oscar-nominated turn as Reinaldo Arenas in Before Night Falls. He later won the Academy Award for portraying the chilling Anton Chigurh in No Country for Old Men, while continuing to balance auteur projects like Vicky Cristina Barcelona (as Juan Antonio Gonzalo) with major studio films.
Off-screen, Bardem married actor Penélope Cruz in 2010; they have two children. He has also lent his public voice to environmental causes, serving as a Greenpeace ambassador focused on protecting Antarctica.
