Jim Carter

Jim Carter (born August 19, 1948, in Harrogate, Yorkshire) is an English screen and stage actor celebrated for bringing authority, warmth, and wit to character roles across film and television. Also credited as James Edward Carter and James Carter, he is widely recognized by international audiences for his polished, traditional style.

Carter’s signature part is the formidable but deeply human butler Mr Carson in Downton Abbey (2010–2015). His work on the series earned him four consecutive Primetime Emmy nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series (2012–2015), and he later returned to the role for the 2019 feature film continuation.

Beyond the Crawley estate, Carter has built an eclectic filmography spanning period drama, fantasy, and historical storytelling. Notable credits include Shakespeare in Love (Ralph Bashford), The Madness of King George (Fox), The Golden Compass (John Faa), Legionnaire (Lucien Galgani), Creation (Parslow), and The Little Vampire (Rookery). He has also lent his voice as narrator in Hitler's Supergun and appeared as himself in Nordic Noir - The Rise of Scandi Drama.
