Jody Hill

Jody Hill (born October 15, 1976) is an American director, writer, producer, and occasional on-screen performer from North Carolina. He’s best known for shaping sharp-edged, character-driven comedy across film and TV, often working with a close circle of collaborators and popping up in small acting roles.

Hill broke through with The Foot Fist Way, a debut he co-wrote, produced, directed, and acted in—drawing on his background as a martial-arts instructor. The indie’s momentum grew after it caught the attention of Will Ferrell and Adam McKay, helping it find wider distribution and a cult audience. Around the same time, Hill connected with Seth Rogen, leading to a cameo in Superbad as “Tut Long John Silver.”

He later directed Observe and Report, writing the lead role specifically for Rogen and bringing his off-kilter comedic tone to a studio release. On television, Hill co-created and executive produced HBO’s Eastbound & Down, and he has continued to appear on screen in projects such as The Righteous Gemstones.

Beyond narrative work, Hill has also directed high-profile comedy pieces, including the parody music video “Swagger Wagon.” He is married to actress Collette Wolfe, who has appeared in his films.
