Joe Wright
Joe Wright (also credited as Joseph Wright; born August 25, 1972, in London, England) is an English director known for visually bold, performance-driven storytelling. Working across film and television, he has built a reputation for reimagining classic material with modern energy and striking craft.
Wright broke through with acclaimed period adaptations, including Pride & Prejudice (2005), Atonement (2007), and Anna Karenina (2012), later returning to literary-inspired romance with Cyrano (2021). He has also moved confidently into other genres, directing the action thriller Hanna (2011) and the Peter Pan origin tale Pan (2015).
His filmography includes the wartime drama Darkest Hour (2017), and he expanded further into serialized storytelling with the historical drama series Mussolini: Son of the Century (2025). Wright also appears as himself in industry programs such as Directors on Directors and Close Up with The Hollywood Reporter, reflecting his standing among contemporary filmmakers.
