John Harrison
John Harrison (also credited as John S. Harrison Jr., John S. Harrison and John Sutherland) is an American screen artist best known for directing, with a career that bridges cult horror, television event filmmaking, and studio animation. He first built momentum directing rock videos and sharpening his craft as a first assistant director alongside legendary filmmaker George A. Romero.
Harrison became closely associated with Romero’s world through Tales from the Darkside, writing and directing multiple episodes before stepping up to helm Tales from the Darkside: The Movie (1990) for Paramount. The feature earned him major international recognition, including the Grand Prix at the Avoriaz festival in France.
On television, Harrison made a lasting mark with his ambitious adaptations of Frank Herbert’s saga, directing the Emmy-winning miniseries Dune (2000) and later writing and co-producing the follow-up Children of Dune (2003), another Emmy-recognized success. His film work also includes writing and directing genre projects such as Blank Slate.
Beyond directing, Harrison has contributed as a writer on large-scale studio projects, including Disney’s animated feature Dinosaur, and he developed an adaptation of Clive Barker’s Abarat for the studio. He later reunited with Romero as a producer on Diary of the Dead, and he remains a familiar presence in documentaries and retrospectives as an on-screen interviewee.
