John Stockwell
John Stockwell (born March 25, 1961, in Galveston, Texas) is an American screen artist best known for his work as an actor, later expanding into directing, producing, and writing. He began his career in the public eye as an international model, spending significant time in Italy before transitioning into film.
Stockwell’s early acting break came with a feature role in So Fine (1981). He soon became a recognizable face of 1980s cinema, playing Spider in the teen comedy Losin’ It, Dennis Guilder in John Carpenter’s Christine, and Michael Harlan in My Science Project. In 1986, he reached a wider audience as Cougar in the blockbuster aviation drama Top Gun, and later appeared in projects such as Radioactive Dreams and Dangerously Close.
Alongside film, Stockwell made television guest appearances, including on The Young Riders and Friday the 13th: The Series. His time in the fashion world also intersected with pop art history: he was acquainted with Andy Warhol and is referenced in The Warhol Diaries.
Behind the camera, Stockwell built a second career directing films such as Cheaters, Crazy/Beautiful, Blue Crush, Into the Blue, Turistas, and Heart, showcasing a steady evolution from on-screen performer to filmmaker.
