Joseph Kosinski
Joseph Kosinski (born May 3, 1974, in Marshalltown, Iowa) is an American director known for sleek, technology-forward filmmaking and large-scale studio storytelling. Before moving into features, Kosinski built his reputation in computer graphics and CGI-driven advertising, crafting high-impact TV spots that showcased his precision with visuals and atmosphere.
He broke through in Hollywood with Tron: Legacy (2010), bringing a distinctive design sensibility to the iconic sci-fi world. Kosinski followed with the futuristic thriller Oblivion (2013) and the true-story drama Only the Brave (2017), demonstrating range beyond spectacle while maintaining a meticulous visual style.
His global profile surged with Top Gun: Maverick (2022), a crowd-pleasing blockbuster praised for immersive aerial action and practical intensity. The same year, he directed the sci-fi drama Spiderhead (2022), and he continues to expand his filmography with the racing feature F1 (2025).
Kosinski has also appeared as himself in film and TV extras and industry programs, including Visualizing TRON, The Tron Phenomenon, and Directors on Directors, offering insight into his craft and process.
