Julie Andrews
Julie Andrews (born Julia Elizabeth Wells on October 1, 1935, in Walton-on-Thames, Surrey) is a celebrated British screen and stage performer whose work spans acting, singing, and writing. Widely honored across film, television, and music, she has earned major accolades including an Academy Award, Golden Globe, Emmy, Grammy, and BAFTA recognition.
After early success as a young performer, Andrews broke through internationally via Broadway, then became a defining face of the movie musical. Her portrayal of Mary Poppins in Mary Poppins (1964) won her the Oscar for Best Actress, and her enduring popularity was cemented by The Sound of Music (1965). She later expanded into dramatic work as well, including Alfred Hitchcock’s Torn Curtain.
A 1997 throat operation affected the extraordinary vocal range that had once covered four octaves, yet Andrews continued to evolve creatively. In the 2000s she enjoyed a major family-film resurgence, playing Queen Clarisse in The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, voicing Queen Lillian in the Shrek series through Shrek Forever After, narrating Enchanted, and appearing in animation hits like Despicable Me.
Beyond acting, Andrews has directed for the stage and built a parallel career as an author, including children’s books and her memoir Home: A Memoir of My Early Years.
