Julio Quintana

Julio Quintana is an American screen artist known for writing and directing character-driven films shaped by a wide-ranging upbringing. Born in Los Angeles, California, he is the eldest of five brothers in a Cuban-American family whose parents left Cuba and rebuilt their lives in the United States, with his father becoming the first in his family to earn a college degree.

Not long after his birth, Quintana’s family relocated to Kenai, Alaska, beginning a decade marked by frequent moves across California, Louisiana, and Texas. That early immersion in different communities helped fuel his ongoing interest in how cultures differ—and what people share beneath the surface.

Quintana entered the University of Texas at Austin in 2000 to study Mechanical Engineering, then pivoted to Religious Studies, drawn to myth, belief, and the narratives that shape identity. He later added a second degree in Radio-Television-Film, bridging academic curiosity with cinematic craft.

After college, he worked on Terrence Malick’s The Tree of Life (2011) and To the Wonder (2012), experiences that helped refine his voice. Quintana went on to write and direct The Vessel (2016), executive produced by Malick and starring Martin Sheen, followed by Blue Miracle (2021) with Dennis Quaid, based on a true story. He lives in Austin, Texas with his wife and producing partner, Marla Quintana, and their three children.
