Karl Urban (born June 7, 1972, in Wellington, New Zealand) is a screen actor known for bringing grit, wit, and physicality to blockbuster franchises and character-driven dramas alike. Credited early as Karl-Heinz Urban, he built his craft at home before becoming a familiar face to global audiences.
Urban’s career took off through New Zealand television and films, including genre staples such as Xena: Warrior Princess. His first major step into Hollywood came with the 2002 horror feature Ghost Ship, opening the door to a steady run of international roles that showcased his range from action to suspense.
He gained wide recognition as Éomer in The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers and The Return of the King, and later as Vaako in The Chronicles of Riddick. Other notable credits include The Bourne Supremacy (Kirill), Doom (John “Reaper” Grimm), Pathfinder (Ghost), and the New Zealand drama Out of the Blue.
Urban continued to expand his pop-culture footprint with major franchise work, including the Star Trek reboot films, and a leading role on TV in Almost Human. Since 2019, he has headlined Amazon’s hit series The Boys as Billy Butcher, cementing his status as a modern genre icon.
