Kelly Macdonald

Kelly Macdonald (born February 23, 1976) is a Scottish screen actress celebrated for quietly magnetic performances across film and television. Over a career spanning decades, she has earned major industry recognition, including a BAFTA, a Primetime Emmy, and multiple Screen Actors Guild Awards.

She first broke through in Danny Boyle’s Trainspotting as the sharp, self-possessed Diane, announcing a talent for grounded, intelligent character work. Macdonald soon became a standout in prestige cinema, appearing in titles such as Elizabeth (as Isabel Knollys) and Robert Altman’s ensemble mystery Gosford Park (as Mary Maceachran), while continuing to take on varied roles in films like Finding Neverland, Nanny McPhee, and The Merry Gentleman.

Her acclaimed turn as Carla Jean Moss in the Coen brothers’ No Country for Old Men brought her a BAFTA supporting actress nomination and remains one of her most lauded performances. She has also lent her voice to animation, notably as Princess Merida in Pixar’s Brave.

On TV, Macdonald won an Emmy for the BBC film The Girl in the Café and received further Emmy attention for her work on Boardwalk Empire. She has continued to impress in projects such as Black Mirror, Giri/Haji, and Line of Duty.
