Lance Oppenheim
Lance Oppenheim (born January 26, 1996, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida) is an American filmmaker and director whose work often moves fluidly between documentary and cinematic storytelling. He is also known as a producer and multi-instrumentalist, bringing a distinctive rhythm and tone to his screen work.
Oppenheim’s films are recognized for their curiosity about people who build lives and a sense of “home” in unexpected environments. By blending genres and observing intimate, character-driven details, he spotlights communities and individuals living on the margins of conventional spaces—without reducing them to simple labels.
His feature debut, Some Kind of Heaven (2020), marked a major breakthrough, earning an Official Selection at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival and introducing him to a wider international audience. The film helped establish his reputation for empathetic, visually precise nonfiction filmmaking.
In addition to directing, Oppenheim has screen credits including an uncredited appearance as Julian in The Whale. He continues to develop projects that challenge genre boundaries while staying grounded in human stories.
