Luna Lauren Vélez
Luna Lauren Vélez (also credited as Lauren Luna Vélez, Luna Velez, and Lauren Vélez) is an American screen actress born on November 2, 1964, in Brooklyn, New York. Known for grounded intensity and sharp comic timing, she has built a career spanning film, prestige television, and voice acting.
Vélez became widely recognized on TV through a run of standout roles: Detective Nina Moreno on Fox’s New York Undercover, Dr. Gloria Nathan on HBO’s prison drama Oz, and Elena on ABC’s Ugly Betty. She later reached a new level of mainstream visibility as María LaGuerta on Showtime’s acclaimed crime series Dexter, a performance often cited among the show’s defining ensemble turns.
On the film side, Vélez’s credits range from indie favorites like I Like It Like That (as Lisette Linares) and I Think I Do (as Carol) to thrillers including Rosewood Lane (as Paula Crenshaw). She also appears in titles such as Prince of Central Park and Thicker Than Blood.
