Mahershala Ali

Mahershala Ali (born February 16, 1974, in Oakland, California) is an American screen artist celebrated for his precision, range, and quiet intensity. Also credited as Mahershalalhashbaz Ali, Mahershala Karim-Ali, and Hershal Gilmore, he has earned top industry honors, including two Academy Awards, along with BAFTA, Golden Globe, and Emmy recognition. In recent years, he has been spotlighted by major publications as one of the era’s most influential and accomplished actors.

After completing an MFA at New York University, Ali built momentum on television with roles in Crossing Jordan and Threat Matrix, then broke through in the sci-fi series The 4400. His film profile rose with David Fincher’s The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, where he appeared as Tizzy Weathers, and he continued to gain attention through prominent supporting work in prestige dramas and political thrillers.

Ali’s career-defining acclaim arrived with his Oscar-winning performances in Moonlight and Green Book, making him the first Black actor to win two Academy Awards in the same acting category. On TV, he drew praise for Luke Cage, True Detective (Season 3), and Ramy, while also earning an Emmy as an executive producer for We Are the Dream.

He continues to balance franchise visibility with character-driven projects, voicing Uncle Aaron in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and Beyond the Spider-Verse, appearing in Leave the World Behind as G.H. Scott, and teasing a future as Blade via an uncredited voice cameo in Eternals.
