Matt Smith
Matt Smith (also credited as Matthew Smith) is an English screen and stage actor born on October 28, 1982, in Northampton, Northamptonshire. International audiences know him best for stepping into pop-culture history as the Eleventh Doctor on the BBC’s Doctor Who (2010–2013), a run that also led to high-profile appearances tied to the franchise, including Doctor Who at the Proms and Doctor Who Explained.
Before acting became the plan, Smith aimed for a career in football, but a back injury redirected his path. He trained with the National Youth Theatre and studied drama and creative writing at the University of East Anglia, then built momentum in London theatre with acclaimed productions that sharpened his range and presence.
Smith’s early TV breakthrough came with the BBC’s Philip Pullman adaptations The Ruby in the Smoke and The Shadow in the North, where he played Jim Taylor, followed by a larger role in Party Animals. He later expanded into voice work with Superworm and continued to balance prestige drama with mainstream visibility.
In recent years, he has earned awards attention for portraying Prince Philip in Netflix’s The Crown, and reached a new generation of fans as Daemon Targaryen in HBO’s House of the Dragon, confirming his reputation for bold, character-driven performances.
