Melissa Leo
Melissa Leo (also credited as Margaret May and Melissa Chessington Leo) is an American screen actor born on September 14, 1960, in Manhattan, New York City. Known for tough, emotionally grounded performances, she has built a career that moves confidently between prestige television and acclaimed independent film.
Leo first broke through in 1985 with her acting debut on All My Children, earning early recognition with a Daytime Emmy nomination. Wider audiences came to know her as Detective Sergeant Kay Howard on Homicide: Life on the Street, where she was a key presence across the series’ first five seasons (1993–1997), later returning to the character in Homicide: The Movie.
On film, Leo has delivered standout work in titles such as 21 Grams, Frozen River, Hide and Seek, Welcome to the Rileys, The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada, and Measure of Revenge. Her performances brought major awards attention, including an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress and, for The Fighter (2010), wins at the Golden Globes, SAG Awards, and the Academy Awards for Best Supporting Actress.
She has also appeared on the HBO series Treme and continues to be celebrated for characters marked by grit, empathy, and lived-in realism.
