Michael Showalter
Michael Showalter (born June 17, 1970, in Princeton, New Jersey) is an American director, writer, producer, and screen performer whose comedy roots helped shape a distinctive career behind the camera.
He first broke through as part of the ensemble on MTV’s The State (1993–1995), a launchpad for a generation of alt-comedy voices. With longtime collaborator David Wain, Showalter co-created the Wet Hot American Summer universe—co-writing and appearing in the 2001 cult film as well as later Netflix installments—often reuniting with fellow The State alumni across projects.
As a filmmaker, Showalter wrote and directed The Baxter (2005) and has continued to move fluidly between acting and directing, with on-screen credits including Wet Hot American Summer, Signs, Safe Men, and Two Night Stand. He also co-created and executive produced the series Search Party, blending sharp humor with escalating suspense.
In recent years, Showalter expanded his profile as a director with acclaimed features including The Big Sick (2017) and The Eyes of Tammy Faye (2021), confirming his range from ensemble comedy to character-driven drama.
