Miranda Otto

Miranda Otto (also credited as Miranda Lin Otto) is an Australian screen and stage actor born on December 16, 1967, in Brisbane, Queensland. Raised in a performing family—her parents are actors Lindsay and Barry Otto, and her sister is actor Gracie Otto—she began acting professionally at 18 and quickly moved between intimate independent work and major studio productions.

Otto first drew attention in Australian cinema with roles in films such as Emma’s War, Love Serenade, and The Well, building a reputation for grounded, emotionally precise performances. After years of acclaimed local work, international audiences began to notice her through projects like The Thin Red Line and What Lies Beneath, followed by the offbeat comedy Human Nature.

Her global breakthrough arrived as Éowyn in The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers and The Return of the King, a performance that helped cement her status in modern fantasy cinema. Steven Spielberg later cast her as Mary-Ann opposite Tom Cruise in War of the Worlds, with the production adapting to accommodate her pregnancy.

Beyond film, Otto has been a prominent presence on television and on stage, earning major recognition in Australia and expanding her range with later work including Doctor Sleep and series roles such as Zelda Spellman in Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.
