He earned a BFA from Syracuse University in 1988 and later refined his craft with training in London, building a foundation that bridges classical technique and modern screen work.

Early recognition followed in 1991, when he received a Dramalogue Award for Best Actor for Away Alone.
McDonough’s on-screen career spans major studio titles and genre favorites, including Minority Report (Fletcher), Star Trek: First Contact (Lieutenant Hawk), Ravenous (Reich), and Captain America: The First Avenger (Timothy “Dum Dum” Dugan). He has also appeared in Flags of Our Fathers, The Guardian, 88 Minutes, and Buddy Games.
A lifelong Star Trek enthusiast, McDonough has spoken of playing Hawk as a personal milestone. His TV résumé includes series like NYPD Blue and Quantum Leap, and he has lent his voice to animation as Bruce Banner in The Incredible Hulk.
