Nelson George

Nelson George (born September 1, 1957, in Brooklyn, New York) is an American writer and cultural critic whose work has helped define how modern audiences understand Black music, media, and urban life. Known primarily for writing, George built a reputation for connecting pop culture to the social and political currents that shape it.

Across film and television, he has become a familiar voice in documentary storytelling—often appearing as himself to add historical context and sharp commentary. His on-screen credits include Rap: Looking for the Perfect Beat and Revisiting The Learning Tree, along with music- and legacy-focused projects such as Sidney, Thriller 40, The Minnesota Sound, and Yo! The Story of ‘Yo! MTV Raps’.
