Nia Long

Nia Long (also credited as Nitara Carlynn Long and Nia Talita Long) is an American screen actress born on October 30, 1970, in Brooklyn, New York City. Of Afro-Trinidadian heritage, she was named after the Kwanzaa principle “Nia,” meaning purpose. After her parents separated, she spent time in Iowa City before settling in South Los Angeles, where her early training ranged from dance and gymnastics to guitar and acting.

Long’s career began with a Disney TV movie appearance before she gained steady visibility on daytime television with a multi-year run on Guiding Light. Mainstream audiences soon embraced her as Lisa Wilkes on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, a role that helped define her breakout era. She later anchored network drama as NYPD Officer Sasha Monroe on Third Watch, earning major industry recognition, including a NAACP Image Award.

On film, Long has built a résumé that moves easily between cultural touchstones and crowd-pleasing comedy. Her notable credits include Boyz n the Hood (Brandi), Friday (Debbie), Stigmata (Donna Chadway), Big Momma's House 2 (Sherri), and Are We Done Yet? (Suzanne Persons), along with appearances such as Good Hair as herself.

Beyond acting, Long has also worked behind the camera in music videos, adding a director’s perspective to her on-screen legacy. With decades of performances across TV and film, she remains a defining presence in modern American entertainment.
