Ray Stevenson

Ray Stevenson (May 25, 1964 – May 21, 2023) was a Northern Irish screen and stage actor known for bringing warmth and grit to larger-than-life roles. Born in Lisburn, he spent much of his childhood in northeast England after his family relocated, and he grew up in Cramlington. The son of a Royal Air Force pilot and an Irish mother, he initially set aside his acting ambitions as unrealistic and pursued art, working in London as an interior designer before committing to performance.

At 25, Stevenson pivoted toward acting and trained at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, graduating at 29. He began building credits through 1990s film and television, including The Return of the Native (1994), and steadily expanded his range with TV movies, guest roles, and features.

His international profile rose with King Arthur (2004) as the loyal knight Dagonet, then surged with HBO’s Rome as the fearless, charismatic legionary Titus Pullo. He went on to memorable genre turns in Outpost and as Frank Castle in Punisher: War Zone, later appearing as Volstagg in Thor and in films like The Book of Eli and Cirque du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant.

Stevenson also maintained a strong theatre presence, including roles at York Minster and London’s National Theatre. Off camera, he remained devoted to art—especially watercolor—and was a father to his son, Sebastiano Derek Stevenson (born 2007).
