Rena Owen
Rena Owen (born July 22, 1962, in the Bay of Islands, New Zealand) is a New Zealand screen and stage actor of Māori and Pākehā (European) heritage. Across film, television, and theatre, she has built a career defined by emotionally direct performances and a willingness to take on challenging, character-driven stories.
Owen is best known internationally for her lead turn as Beth Heke in Lee Tamahori’s landmark drama Once Were Warriors (1994). The role helped cement the film’s cult and critical reputation, and it brought Owen major recognition, including Best Actress honors at the Montreal World Film Festival and the San Diego International Film Festival.
She later expanded her range with acclaimed work in Australian cinema, including Rolf de Heer’s Dance Me to My Song (1998), where her performance earned an AFI Awards nomination for Best Supporting Actress. Her filmography also includes roles in Veronika Decides to Die, Nemesis Game, All-American Girl: The Mary Kay Letourneau Story, Roimata, and The Last Survivors, along with voice work in Hinekaro Goes on a Picnic and Blows Up Another Obelisk.
