Ridley Scott

Ridley Scott (also credited as Sir Ridley Scott and internationally known as リドリー スコット) is an English director born on November 30, 1937, in South Shields, County Durham. Celebrated for his moody, meticulously designed visuals, he has become one of cinema’s most commercially successful filmmakers, with a global box-office total in the billions.

After studying at London’s Royal College of Art, Scott first worked in television as a designer and director, then sharpened his storytelling in advertising. He broke into features with The Duellists (1977) and quickly became a defining voice in modern sci-fi with Alien (1979) and later Blade Runner (1982), films praised for their immersive world-building and iconic imagery.

Scott’s range stretches from historical epics to contemporary war dramas, moving from ancient arenas in Gladiator to the chaos of Black Hawk Down and beyond. He earned multiple Academy Award nominations for directing, while Gladiator won Best Picture. Several of his films have also been selected for preservation in the U.S. National Film Registry.

Honored with major industry awards—including a BAFTA Fellowship—and recognized by the British monarchy, Scott continues to influence film and television. He also appears as himself in notable behind-the-scenes and documentary credits such as The Beast Within: Making Alien and The Making of the Last Duel.
