Rodger Bumpass

Rodger Bumpass (also credited as Rodger Albert Bumpass and Rodger A. Bumpass) is an American actor and voice performer born on November 20, 1951, in Little Rock, Arkansas. Celebrated for his sharp character work and instantly recognizable delivery, he has become one of animation’s most familiar supporting voices.

His signature role is Squidward Tentacles on SpongeBob SquarePants, a long-running performance that helped define the show’s comedic rhythm. Bumpass has also voiced Professor Membrane on Invader Zim, adding to his reputation for playing eccentric, high-energy characters across cult and mainstream animation.

Beyond television, his voice can be heard in major animated features such as Monsters, Inc. and The Iron Giant, as well as genre favorites like Heavy Metal. He has continued expanding the SpongeBob universe through projects including The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie and SpongeBob SquarePants Presents The Tidal Zone, while also appearing in live-action titles like Bio-Dome and A Boyfriend for Christmas.

With credits spanning animation, film, and games, Bumpass is known for versatility—and for repeatedly clarifying that his memorable surname isn’t a gag.
