Rowan Athale

Rowan Athale is a British-Indian screen artist from Barnsley, South Yorkshire, known primarily for his work as a writer and filmmaker. Blending genre energy with character-driven storytelling, Athale has built a reputation for sharp, modern thrillers.

He broke through with his feature debut The Rise, which he both wrote and directed. The heist thriller premiered internationally at the Toronto International Film Festival and drew significant attention on the awards circuit, earning nominations including the Douglas Hickox Award at the British Independent Film Awards, Best Newcomer at the BFI London Film Festival, and TIFF’s Discovery recognition.

Athale followed with Strange But True, a noir-leaning thriller produced by Fred Berger and featuring a notable ensemble cast including Gregg Kinnear, Amy Ryan, Nick Robinson, Margaret Qualley, Brian Cox, and Blythe Danner. The film’s U.S. release was backed by CBS.

Beyond individual projects, Athale has been highlighted as a Screen International “Star of Tomorrow” and later named a BAFTA Breakthrough Brit. He is also a partner at the UK production company Hook Pictures and frequently collaborates with his brother, composer Neil Dinar Athale.
