Ruth Wilson

Ruth Wilson (born January 13, 1982, in Ashford, Surrey, England) is an English screen and stage actress celebrated for intelligent, emotionally precise performances across period drama, crime, and contemporary television. She first drew major attention playing the title role in Jane Eyre (2006), establishing a reputation for bringing classic characters to life with modern edge.

Wilson became widely recognized as the brilliant, unpredictable Alice Morgan in the BBC crime drama Luther (2010–2013, 2019). She later led Showtime’s acclaimed series The Affair (2014–2018) as Alison Lockhart, and headlined the autobiographical drama Mrs Wilson (2018), again taking on an eponymous role with nuance and restraint.

Since 2019, she has portrayed Marisa Coulter in the BBC/HBO fantasy adaptation His Dark Materials, a performance that earned her the 2020 BAFTA Cymru Award for Best Actress. Her film work includes The Lone Ranger (as Rebecca Reid) and Saving Mr. Banks (as Margaret Goff), alongside notable appearances in Anna Karenina (Princess Betsy Tverskoy) and Suite Française (Madeleine Labarie).
