Ryan Condal

Ryan Condal is an American screenwriter and producer from Hasbrouck Heights, New Jersey, best known for his work in television writing and franchise storytelling. He has built a reputation for shaping ambitious genre series, balancing character-driven drama with large-scale worldbuilding.

Condal rose to wider prominence as the showrunner of HBO’s House of the Dragon, the Game of Thrones prequel. For the first season, he shared showrunning duties with director-producer Miguel Sapochnik, helping steer the series’ tone, structure, and long-form narrative.

Before returning to Westeros, Condal served as a showrunner on the American science-fiction drama Colony. He also worked on an ultimately cancelled fantasy-western project—an experience that led to a key professional connection with author George R.R. Martin.

A longtime reader of A Song of Ice and Fire, Condal discovered the novels around the release of A Storm of Swords. Martin has noted that Condal initially hoped to adapt the Tales of Dunk & Egg stories, which were considered premature for TV at the time. In 2023, Warner Bros. Discovery greenlit A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms (formerly The Hedge Knight), with Condal attached as an executive producer.
