Sam Hoffman

Sam Hoffman is an American screen artist best known for his work as a producer and occasional director, with a career that spans prestige television, independent film, and viral digital comedy. He has served as a producer and periodic director on the CBS political drama Madam Secretary, and has also been developing an adaptation of Michael Pollan’s bestselling The Omnivore’s Dilemma with producing partner Frances McDormand.

Hoffman is also recognized as the creator of the web series Old Jews Telling Jokes, a breakout hit that amassed more than 50 million views and expanded into multiple formats. The project has been released on DVD, aired internationally on the BBC, inspired a book that has gone through multiple printings, and led to an off-Broadway stage production that continues touring across North America.

In feature films, Hoffman’s producing credits include Wes Anderson’s Moonrise Kingdom, John Carney’s Begin Again, and Richard Loncraine’s 5 Flights Up. Earlier, he built experience as an assistant director on acclaimed titles such as The Royal Tenenbaums—where he also appears on screen as a paramedic—along with School of Rock, Donnie Brasco, Dead Man Walking, and Groundhog Day.
