Sam Rockwell
Sam Rockwell (also credited as Samuel Rockwell) is an American actor born on November 5, 1968, in Daly City, California. Celebrated for his sharp character work and restless screen energy, Rockwell has built a career that moves easily between studio hits, indie standouts, and prestige productions.
His most acclaimed turn came as troubled officer Jason Dixon in Martin McDonagh’s Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (2017), which earned him the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. He followed that with another Supporting Actor Oscar nomination for Adam McKay’s political satire Vice (2018), confirming his place among the era’s most reliable scene-stealers.
On television, Rockwell portrayed legendary choreographer Bob Fosse in FX’s Fosse/Verdon (2019), a performance that brought him a Primetime Emmy nomination. He has also remained active on stage, receiving a Tony Award nomination for the Broadway revival of David Mamet’s American Buffalo (2022).
Rockwell’s filmography spans fan favorites and bold dramas, including Galaxy Quest (Guy Fleegman), The Green Mile (“Wild Bill” Wharton), Iron Man 2 (Justin Hammer), Charlie’s Angels (Eric Knox), Confessions of a Dangerous Mind (Chuck Barris), The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (Charley Ford), and Heist (Jimmy Silk).
