Samuel D. Hunter

Samuel D. Hunter (born January 1, 1981, in Moscow, Idaho) is an American screen artist and acclaimed playwright whose writing is known for its intimate scale and emotional precision. Raised in Idaho and later based in New York City, Hunter has built a reputation for stories that find drama in everyday lives and overlooked places.

He first drew major attention with A Bright New Boise, earning the 2011 Obie Award for playwriting. That breakthrough helped establish him as a distinctive contemporary voice, celebrated for characters who feel lived-in and sharply observed.

Hunter’s best-known work, The Whale, further cemented his standing, winning the 2013 Drama Desk Award and the 2013 Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Play. The piece’s impact has extended beyond the stage, introducing wider audiences to his compassionate, unsentimental approach to difficult subjects.

In addition to his writing, Hunter has appeared on screen in the documentary featurette People Are Amazing: Making 'The Whale' as himself, offering viewers a closer look at the creative process behind one of his most recognized titles.
