Sjón
Sjón (born August 27, 1962, in Reykjavík, Iceland) is the pen name of Sigurjón Birgir Sigurðsson, an acclaimed Icelandic poet, novelist, lyricist, and screenwriter whose work bridges literature, music, and cinema. Raised in Reykjavík’s Breiðholt district, he began publishing remarkably young, debuting with a poetry collection as a teenager and soon becoming a distinctive voice in the city’s avant-garde arts scene.
In the early 1980s, Sjón emerged as a key figure in Iceland’s cultural life, including as a founder of the neo-surrealist group Medúsa. He also stepped onto the music stage, memorably appearing with The Sugarcubes under the alter ego “Johnny Triumph,” a playful persona he revisited for special performances.
A long-running creative partnership with Björk has helped define his international profile. After meeting in their teens, the two later collaborated on songs for her solo work, including “I’ve Seen It All” for Dancer in the Dark, earning major awards attention. Sjón also appears in music documentaries such as Inside Björk and the concert-film portrait Screaming Masterpiece.
On screen, Sjón is known for imaginative storytelling, contributing the story and screenplay for the animated Anna and the Moods—and voicing Dr. Artmann. In recent years he has co-written high-profile features including Lamb and Robert Eggers’ epic The Northman, confirming his place as one of Iceland’s most influential contemporary writers.
